New Year's Eve in Byron Bay: What to Expect and Where to Stay

1 min read

New Year's Eve is one of the busiest nights of the year in Byron Bay. In recent years Byron Shire Council has run Soul Street, a free, family-friendly celebration in the town centre, alongside strong alcohol-free rules. Here's what to expect and how to plan your stay.

Details change each year. Check the Byron Shire Council website for this year's program, road closures and rules before you travel.

Soul Street in the town centre

In 2024 Soul Street ran from 4pm with live music and kids' activities on Jonson Street, twilight markets in Railway Park and a main stage at Dening Park near the surf club from 6pm. Expect roving performers, street dining and dancing. It's all within easy walking distance of Waves on Lawson Street.

Know the rules

  • Much of the town centre is an alcohol-free zone over New Year, with a strong police presence.

  • Camping in the streets and in cars is banned and enforced with fines.

Why book early

Accommodation in the centre of town is in short supply over New Year, and most visitors want to walk to the celebrations and the beach rather than drive and park. Book as early as you can, and check minimum-stay rules for the holiday period.

Making a night of it

Book dinner well ahead: our Byron Bay restaurant guide covers the places closest to the hotel. On New Year's Day, walk the Cape Byron lighthouse track and watch the sunrise from mainland Australia's most easterly point.

Waves is 60 metres from Main Beach and a few minutes from Jonson Street. See our rooms and suites and check availability for New Year to book direct.
